Where art meets precision and espresso culture
ECM combines Italian espresso culture with German engineering. ECM espresso machines and grinders stand for precision craftsmanship, timeless design, and uncompromising quality. Yet sometimes, something emerges that goes far beyond the world of espresso. A perfect example is the individually designed ECM Synchronika II, presented at the ECM booth during World of Coffee Brussels. Combining precise engineering with artistic expression, it shows that an ECM espresso machine is more than a functional product. It inspires. It tells stories. And it becomes a medium for creative expression.
When an ECM espresso machine becomes a canvas

At the heart of this art project is the ECM Synchronika II. It reflects the core values of ECM: precise craftsmanship, innovation, timeless design and the attention to detail. This makes it the ideal foundation for a project that connects engineering with creativity. The inspiration was taken up by Josef Bathen, owner and creative director of the specialty coffee roastery ODIBA in Gelsenkirchen. ODIBA is also an authorized ECM dealer. For him, the Synchronika II is far more than an espresso machine. It is a creative canvas. “Privately, my ECM espresso machine already stands in the kitchen like a piece of art.” Josef Bathen explains. From the beginning, his intention was clear: The Synchronika II should be artistically refined without losing its everyday usability. Or as he puts it: “Art that works in everyday life.”
From an idea to a unique creation: The design process of the customized Synchronika II
Josef Bathen has been passionate about art since childhood. Early drawings and graffiti gradually evolved into his distinctive artistic style. When he joined the family business ODIBA, he began searching for his own creative identity. His goal was to connect two worlds: art and coffee. “ The ECM is my favorite espresso machine. My very first machine – long before the collaboration – was a Technika II.” He particularly appreciates the classic ECM models, their timeless design, and their durable, high-quality construction. As a trained industrial mechanic, he is especially fascinated by the precision of every component. These qualities made the ECM Synchronika II the perfect foundation for the project. Thanks to its removable side panels, new creative possibilities emerged while full functionality was preserved.

Pop Art. Craftsmanship. Usability.
From the first sketches on paper to the final application on the espresso machine, every detail was carefully developed. Throughout the entire process, one principle remained central: the machine had to remain fully functional. “Small components were especially fascinating to me, as they allowed for very fine detailing.” Josef Bathen explains. At the same time, all materials had to withstand heat exposure. For this reason, only heat-resistant paints and materials were used. Even the ECM logo, pressure gauges, and base were carefully integrated into the design concept.
The motifs themselves also tell a story. On one side is the bull, representing the artist’s zodiac sign. On the other is the monkey, ODIBA’s signature brand symbol. These are complemented by landmarks of Brussels and numerous fine details that give the machine its unique identity.
One espresso machine. Many perspectives.
This project shows that an ECM espresso machine is far more than a premium tool for preparing coffee. It inspires baristas, delights coffee enthusiasts, and opens new perspectives for artists and creative minds alike. In this way, a cup of coffee becomes more than a moment of enjoyment. It becomes inspiration. Bringing together people with different perspectives and sparking new ideas.
