The beginning of a family history
The story of ECM began long before the company was founded in 1996. In the 1970s, Wolfgang Hauck and his wife established Elektroland in Heidelberg, Germany. At the time, the family business specialized in electrical appliances. One journey to Italy changed everything. Inspired by Italy’s unique espresso culture, Wolfgang Hauck returned home with a Gaggia espresso machine. During customer meetings, he began serving espresso. It soon became clear that espresso was far more than just a beverage. It brings people together and represents enjoyment, hospitality, and the Italian way of life.
This passion laid the foundation for Form & Funktion, which became the exclusive Gaggia distributor in Germany. At a time when espresso was still largely unknown, the company introduced authentic Italian espresso culture to the German market. Form & Funktion also challenged conventional product design. While household appliances were dominated by brown and orange tones, the Hauck family deliberately chose premium materials, clean lines, and timeless aesthetics. A design philosophy that continues to define every ECM espresso machine and espresso grinder today.
1996 – From a vision to premium espresso technology
In 1996, ECM GmbH was founded with a clear vision: to introduce professional espresso technology to the German market. Together with ECM S.p.A. in Italy, the first ECM espresso machines were created. From the very beginning, ECM united two worlds: the heritage of Italian espresso culture and German engineering. In 2005, a new chapter began: ECM GmbH evolved as an independent brand, driven by its own innovations, uncompromising premium quality, and the continuous development within its own production facilities.
ECM machines and grinders – Craftsmanship that inspire. Built to last.
The introduction of the ECM Technika I in 1997 marked the beginning of the ECM Home Line. With professional espresso technology, ECM made café-quality espresso possible at home – without compromising on craftsmanship, design, or performance. As the company continued to grow, the ECM product portfolio expanded. The introduction of the ECM Commercial Line brought two-group espresso machines to professional environments. This allowed ECM to combine its expertise in premium espresso technology with the demands of professional users. In 2014, ECM expanded its expertise into espresso grinder production. With the S64 grinder series, the company created the foundation for perfectly balanced espresso setups. Because exceptional espresso is the result of the perfect harmony between a premium espresso machine and a precise grinder.

30 Years of ECM – From family owned business in Heidelberg to an international premium brand

Even after three decades, ECM remains a family-owned company. Today, Managing Director, Michael Hauck, leads the business in its second generation. For more than 15 years, he has been guiding ECM’s transformation from a family business into an internationally recognized premium brand with its own product development and manufacturing.
Today, ECM stands worldwide for premium espresso machines and coffee grinders. With more than 500 authorized ECM dealers in over 55 countries, the brand reaches passionate home baristas, coffee enthusiasts, and professional users around the globe.
